Ditch Your BORING Routine, Here’s How To Find the Perfect Hobby As a Millennial

Ditch Your BORING Routine, Here’s How To Find the Perfect Hobby As a Millennial

There have been times where my 9-5 job just…sucked. Ever had one of those?

At the end of every weekend, the Sunday scaries CREEP up on you like there’s no tomorrow and come Monday morning, you hit snooze like that button would be the thing paying you a six-figure salary, as opposed to getting your butt out of bed and going to work.

In the times in my life where this was the reality, I was less than happy. Constantly searching for something better, I knew that there was a solution beyond quitting my job (because that’s not always an option).

After although crying in a conference was a fun extracurricular and all, I knew I deserved more. I mean…WE ALL DESERVE MORE.

In times like these, it occurred to me that the best thing we can do for ourselves is to find something outside of work to make all ours. Something we can control and look forward to.

I’ve always loved exercise (and being on a mic!) so I actually became a spin instructor.

It took me six months of training, getting certified and auditioning but man is it still rewarding. When work is feeling like a grind, I always have my classes and students to look forward to. Now when work or life is going a little rougher than normal, I have something to look forward to.

Now the point of this story is this: a hobby can LITERALLY have the power to change your happiness. Or at least, it did for me. Having a hobby, outside of your day job, is essential for every 20 something (IMO).

Find the perfect hobby as a 20-something or millennial, that's fun, fulfilling and might even make you some money! Here is a list of hobby's that you can try, that easy and for women! #hobby #listofhobbies #hobbyforwomen #findingahobby

I wanted to come up with a list of non-drinking adult hobbies that YOU can get involved in. Most of these examples are specific to my home of San Francisco, BUT, I feel confident there are similar activities in almost every city!

What are some “adult” extracurriculars you can get involved in? These are all for San Francisco, but most major cities have similar activities and companies.

Whether or not you get a group of friends and find something that you will look forward to days in advance and something you could think about before you fall asleep.

Hobby Idea 1: Join an Intramural Sports League

Whether or not you are a born athlete, adult sports leagues are a thing. Besides an excuse to drink on the weekdays, it’s an amazing way to get to know a big group of guys and girls. Beer and kickball? Yes, please. If you don’t want to break a sweat, you can even play a sport like bocce ball. Check out companies like Zog Sports or Play in the Bay for more ideas.

Hobby Idea 2: Learn Something New

I always believe that you should be a lifelong learner and continue challenging yourself. There is so much to learn in the world. Instead of re-watching a show on Netflix, why don’t you learn how to cook? Code? The possibilities are endless. You can easily take a class and you are more likely to meet someone you can be friends with if there is a common interest!

Hobby Idea 3: Join a Charity Organization

Helping others can really help you get out of your own head and put life into perspective. It also can be a fun community and way to meet people. If you are looking for an extracurricular charity organization, I would recommend an organization like Girls on the Run or Habitat for Humanity, a place where you can work towards a goal and meet new people.

Hobby Idea 4: Work Out At a Gym that Feels Like a Community

There are a few types of boutique gyms that feel more like communities that workout classes. Barry’s Bootcamp, Soul Cycle, Flywheel, just to name a few. These instructors will become your friends and because of the family environment, you’ll likely see the same people there more than once. Also, the instructors say amazing inspirational quotes while you work out.

Whatever you do, make sure it’s something that makes you feel empowered, in control and strong. This is your extracurricular and something you are doing only for yourself.

Odds are, it WILL take time out of your social life or away from relaxing, so make sure it’s something you feel super excited about! Although work is pretty settled for me right now, I’m SURE there will be another point in my life where I’m craving something external and I’m so grateful I have cycling to fall back on!

These are all great ideas. I already have a number of hobbies so I don’t need to add anything more, even though there are lots of cool opportunities out there! I do community theater, and if you’ve ever wanted to sing or dance lots of them are open to newcomers. Also book clubs and libraries and stuff! And in addition to my running schedule I’ve been going to a rock climbing gym too which is a cool hobby.

What I would love to do is join a workout community in my city where I can meet other women who are interested in a healthy lifestyle. I love treating myself to wine for a girls night in, but I rather go hiking or kayaking. So it’s hard to meet those like-minded people! I also love that you mentioned learning something. I’m currently researching some marketing/blogging/communications courses to take to hone in on what I truly love to do!

I actually started my blog as my hobby, a fun thing to do after work that included my other hobby (food) but didn’t involve actually talking to anyone because I’m so exhausted of being social after work!

Thanks for the suggestions! Since I am now transitioning into working full time in my postgrad life, I have been thinking a lot about hobbies. Though I love my job, I definitely know that I need new and exciting things to do in my free time!
