9 Proven Ways To Get Ahead at Work

Are you sitting at your desk all day, feeling like everyone else is getting ahead at work but you? Gosh, that is the absolute worst feeling. I have been there (more times than I can count). It’s not enough that you are working what feels like a zillion hours a week, but also not being recognized?! Excuse me?! If you want proven ways to get ahead at work, maybe even get a promotion – this is for you.

Getting ahead at work is not easy. Maybe your office is full of overly loud frat boys or people who constantly yell about your achievements – maybe your boss doesn’t believe in you, so it’s harder to make a name for yourself. Whatever it is, I bet you are kicking a$$ right now you girl boss, you. There is no reason why you don’t deserve to be on the same pedestal as your co-workers. We need to make sure you have the same opportunities to get ahead as others do.

I’ve been passed up for promotion so many times…

I remember sitting in a conference room a few years ago asking for a promotion from my then boss. “Your just not ready,” he said as I bit my lip to avoid tears from starting to stream down my face.

A million thoughts starting going through my mind, ‘Why wasn’t I ready? What was I doing wrong? Why can’t I get ahead? How was getting promoted instead of me?’

Most of all, hearing these words stung. The lack of clarity allowed me to turn inward and say things to myself that I’ll likely never repeat – imagining the worst of reasons on why I was not good enough for this next opportunity.

Then, something shifted…

After some time, tears, and mental clarity, I had a moment to look back at being passed up for a job promotion at work. Although I truly felt as though I deserved to be recognized for my work at the time – I wasn’t. It turned out, I wasn’t doing everything right. (I know, it was NOT fun to come to terms with that).

If this is your situation right now, just know, that I’ve been there. There’s no way to get around that it absolutely stinks. What I’ve learned is that although we hope others will prop us up at work, getting us the opportunity to get ahead – that’s not always the case. That’s why I came up with a playbook to take matters into my own hands.

Ok girl bosses, let’s dive in. Here are 9 ways to get ahead at work. Heck, let’s even try and get you promoted

9 Proven Ways To Get Ahead at Work  – No Matter What Your Job Is

Make Your Goals Heard So Your Managers Know You Want To Get Ahead

One of the easiest ways to get promoted and noticed at work is to actually talk about your goals with your boss (and your bosses boss). Being a manager is not easy, and it’s important for managers to understand where their employees want to go with their careers. That’s why you have to make your goals heard. If your goal is to get promoted, make sure you vocalize that to your manager immediately.

Ladies, if you get anything from this post, remember that you must ask for a promotion or a raise, you cannot be scared to ask your manager. No one will give you anything – unless you ask. I literally don’t care if you never come back to T20S again (ok, I care a little), but start asking and I can sleep well tonight. If you want to get ahead at work, follow these tips for getting noticed at work. Learning how to getting ahead at work is not easy, but these tips will help you learn how to get promoted at work quickly. Be Proactive So Your Team Knows You Are Going Above and Beyond

A great way to get noticed at work is to be proactive. This is a great way to get ahead at work, fast! Whether it’s an upcoming process, a project that’s being creative, doing more than what’s asked of me has been a secret to my success. I am almost always proactive at work in every sense of the way – it’s helped me get noticed and get ahead.

One of the biggest work tips I can give is that your job at work is to make your bosses life easier. So many people go into work thinking that your manager is supposed to be supporting you. And in theory, a great manager will be. However, in reality – if you go in with the mindset of making your bosses life easier, you will more likely successful. Promise!

Set Expectations To Ensure Your Priorities are Outlined

If you feel like you are working so hard, but not getting ahead at work, you might need to set expectations with your manager. Setting expectations is an easy way to get ahead at work! One of the missed steps in getting ahead at work is often just that – making sure you have clear expectations from your boss or manager on what they expect of you.

Because what if you are working more than 40 hours a week, but working on things that your boss doesn’t really care about? Or what if you aren’t working on projects that are impactful to the organization?

Setting expectations is a surefire way to be sure you are getting ahead at work.

Create Structure For Your Promotion Opportunity

If your work is unclear about expectations, and you don’t have a boss that supports you, I would recommend creating structure to get ahead at work. Here’s what I mean – if you work at a company without written (yes, written) rules around your expectations – make them yourself. Take a pen and paper, be proactive (see what I did there) and create a plan of what would define you going ‘above and beyond’ with your job.

Then, bring this outline to your boss and go through it. Where do you stand now? Are you doing all of these things? Get their agreement that if you do these things, you will get ahead at work, maybe you’ll even get promoted.

If you’d like more advice on creating this, write in the comments!

Be Positive Even If Others Are Negative

This may seem simple, but so many people overlook the power of being positive at work in getting ahead.

Seriously – no one likes the person complaining or gossiping about how hard things are. Find ways to be possible on the job. Even if it means complaining to your BF of your friends, try to stay positive at work. It will help you get noticed in your job. In a sea full of unhappy people, try and look at the bright side.

Take And Ask For Feedback To Continue Improving at Your Job

One of the best ways to get ahead at work is to ask for, and take, feedback. How your doing at work should never, ever be a surprise. Seriously, how will you know how you can get promoted if you don’t know what you need to work on? How will you know why you are not getting ahead if you are not outlining what you need to work on?

It’s so important if you want to get ahead at work to take and ask for feedback. I do it at least once a month, for reference.

Volunteer For Projects To Go Above and Beyond

If you want to get ahead at work, try volunteering for projects or a leadership role. Again, being proactive and going above and beyond is a little work secret that will head you get noticed. That being said, if an opportunity comes straight to you – take it.

Next time a project comes up in a meeting that might be a little extra work, take it. You need to be the one to get ahead at work!

Speak Up at Meetings So Your Voice Is Heard

Speaking up at meetings is a great way to get noticed and get ahead at work. I’m not saying you always have to be the loudest person in the room. But, don’t be afraid to share your opinion. Don’t be nervous to speak in a big group of people.

Making sure that people know how valuable you are to the company is an important part of getting ahead at work.

Take Credit For Your Work So People Know How Hard You are Working

Lastly, make sure you are taking credit for your work. If you want to get promoted or get noticed on the job, it’s really important that you take credit for your work. Now, it’s important that you do this in a respectful way. Don’t bulldoze others to show what you do.

But make sure you are showing your value to the company. If you want to get ahead at work, you must make sure that others agree how much you are doing.

So there you have it. What will you do differently now to get ahead at work?
