A Lazy Millennial’s Guide to Being Able to Throw Amazing Outdoor Parties All Summer Long

This post contains affiliate links. As always, all opinions are my own.

Because roommates and rent are a real thing (womp), the ability to host can feel NEAR impossible as a 20-something. Well, good news for you, you can wash away any frustrations you have with hosting outdoor parties right now (maybe with some wine?!) because your ultimate outdoor party guide is HERE.

Your Step by Step Guide to Throwing Banging Outdoor Parties (With Minimal Effort!)

1. Find a Space

IMO a common misconception is that you need a super fancy space to throw an incredible outdoor party.

Maybe one day when I’m NOT 26 I will throw a Great Gatsby-like party and we can redo this article…but until then…

I totally disagree that you need some super fancy space to throw an amazing outdoor party. If you are lucky enough to have a backyard or a rooftop, then, of course, host here. I MAY be biased here because I live in San Francisco where these luxuries barely exist (like, I barely have laundry), but if you don’t have an easy place to host, no fear – find a local park or a friend’s roof/backyard – and host there. You’ll only need a few things to make your party AWESOME.

Lucky for you I’ve thrown a good backyard party in my day and have the recipe (pun intended) for a perfect day below.

2. Step Up Your Cocktail Game

Cocktails can sound intimidating but making a pretty Instagram-worthy drink is actually easier than it looks. AND, having colorful drinks will spice up your outdoor bash. Really, all you need to do is:

A. Add fruit

B. Get cute glasses

C. And a pretty beverage dispenser

I loved these glasses because they can double as cocktail OR water glasses (so fetch!). When making fun cocktails for your outdoor party, I love for other’s to be able to see the colors of the cocktail, especially because I always add fruit to mine for color AND taste.

As for the beverage dispenser, I loved that this one was clear so if you added fruit to your water or cocktails, it’s an adorable spruce to the party. I found it here!

Here is my favorite summer cocktail recipe (if you must know!):

Tequila Sunrise Summer Recipe

  • 1 shot of Tequila
  • Splash of grenadine
  • Half a cup of OJ
  • Fruit of your choice (I recommend strawberries & oranges for color)

3. Be Saved By the Small Bites

Finger foods will be a saving grace for any party. Without the pressure of a full meal, there are so many ideas for outdoor finger foods. If you service these finger foods in cute places, even better. I like keeping any outdoor bash as colorful as possible!

I personally LOVE this minimalist serving tray for colorful and fun finger foods.

Here is my favorite (EASY) finger food for a party, it makes a fun activity as well.

Summer Smores Recipe

  • Graham Cracker
  • Slice of a chocolate
  • Strawberry (!!)
  • Marshmellow

… Go get SOME MORE (see what I did there)… and add an extra flavor to your s’more to add a little summer to your recipe!

4. Play Some Games

Having a fun outdoor game is such a fun accessory for an outdoor party. I love giant board games (and Jenga type games especially) because they are great for big groups and there are so many variations. That’s why I loved this one!

Bonus: you can bring a set like this to any party or park. It doesn’t have to be your own. You can even write dares or questions on each of the sides of the Jenga set to make it a game of truth or dare.

5. Add In Some String lights

String lights are the perfect (and easy!) accessory to any outdoor party. I love when string lights look like they could easily wrap around anything you have outside. These string lights looked perfect for that.

There you have it. Which of these tips are you going to try for your outdoor party?! Comment below!
