The next 2 posts are part of T20S’s Skincare Series! 👐We worked with my facialist, Shari Spakes, to share everything you need to know about having glowing, like a baby’s bottom skin in your 20s (and beyond). Shari has been featured in publications like Goop and Allure (and is one of the only reasons my skin is in semi-good shape).
I learned SO much about keeping my skin healthy by doing this post with Shari, I can’t wait to hear what you learn too. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with T20S, Shari!

As I’ve entered my mid-20s, I’ve truly started to feel the effects of aging. Not only have my hangovers come a little easier and my body a little achier, I’ve noticed crevices in my skin that were never there before. WTF?! Do I have wrinkles?!
In the past year, I’ve become addicted to skincare. After a minor battle with adult acne (thanks to the IUD), I started seeing a facialist. My skin has absolutely transformed after starting to see Shari. The most shocking part of this all was that there was SO MUCH I DIDN’T KNOW. Like the fact that I was stuffing my face with cheese at every wine happy hour I could find… (you’ll understand why this is bad if you keep reading)
I wanted to share Shari’s skincare secrets with you all so we can all feel confident in our NATURAL beauty forevs. And evs. ☝️☝️☝️
Why You Need To Start Taking Care Of Your Skin, ASAP
The biggest thing I learned from talking to Shari is that it’s never too early to start taking care of your skin. Your skin is going to age whether you like it or not. The best thing YOU can do is help it age well.
What do you mean, “age well”?
Shari told me to start thinking of my skin like a baklava. Yes, baklava. LOL.
She explained that your skin has tons of layers and it’s constantly flaking off. If you don’t encouraging the rebuilding of your skin (so more layers) as you get older, your skin starts to look less full and you start to see those effects of aging.
As you get older, you start to lose collagen (the natural, structural protein in your skin), your skin because less smooth or elastic-y when you need. You need to encourage the rebuilding (cellular turnover) of your skin at a young age to continue having that young skin forever. This will help your skin produce more natural collagen. 👉
Now that we get WHY we age, what can we do to keep our skin looking young?
The Three Skincare Secrets That Will Keep You Looking Young Forever (From My BRILLIANT Facialist) 👉👉👉
You Are What You Eat
I feel like I’ve heard this quote a million times before. And before chatting with Shari, I would have given it a serious eye-roll for the cliche advice. Shari explained to me that there’s a massive correlation between your gut/stomach and your skin. That means what you eat can greatly affect how your skin looks.
The obvious culprit is sugar. Shari explained that because sugar is inflammatory, it can seriously mess with your skin.
But the second half of this is that so much of the food that we eat has hormones and bacteria in it. Acne can be caused my hormones AND bacteria, and so the whole “smooth” aspect of your skin will go out the window if you are constantly eating these foods (such as cheese and dairy).
If you want your skin to rebuild as it gets older, eating healthy is a huuuuuge part of that. I started taking probiotics re: Shari’s suggestions and it has transformed my skin! I also try and cut down the diary in my diet which doesn’t hurt either.
You can also take collagen (in a pill or powder), which will help your body produce it.
Before You Invest in Botox…
Shari reiterated that so many people WAIT until they are older (and already feeling the aging in their skin) to really do something about it. Enter Botox or plastic surgery. I’m all for YOU DOING YOU, but I also learned that there are so many things you can do in your twenties to have to avoid those investments when you’re older.
The biggest thing that Shari told me to do was to start taking a Retinoid. I had always avoided these creams because they made my skin flakey and I had to get a prescription, which was such a pain. Shari explained that you actually don’t need a prescription to use one of these creams. You can get them at the drugstore, even.
Using this Vitamin A derivative produces collagen, gets rid of acne scars and is so helpful in anti-aging. I just starting using it every night, so let’s see how this goes!
Let ☀️SPF☀️ Be Your BFF
No surprise here, Shari told me the BEST thing you can do long-term for your skin is to wear sunscreen. This is the BEST way to avoid skin aging. Although we hear this time and time again, there are two myths that should be debunked when thinking about sun and your skincare.
MYTHS ABOUT SKIN + SUN:
- Wearing a hat does not prevent you from the sun: I actually had NO idea about this one. The radiation in the air is PART of the problem when it comes to sun damage to your skin, not just to the physical rays of the sun from above. This is why you need to wear sunscreen every day.
- A higher SPF does not mean stronger sunscreen. Say what?! It’s actually just the number of minutes your sunscreen will ‘stay good’, so keep applying!
